Friends of the Foundation
Each year the South Carolina Nurse Foundation (SCNF) is honored to showcase and honor annually a nurse leader. This year we are honoring Stephanie Burgess, PhD, APRN, BE, FAAN, FAANP. Dr. Burgess has been a nurse leader in South Carolina (SC) for thirty years. She headed passage of at least nine legislative Scope of Practice Bills in the SC General Assembly benefitting Advanced Practice Nurses (APRNs) and patients in SC.
Burgess retired as Associate Dean for Practice and Health Policy and Director of the MSN/DNP programs at the University of South Carolina (USC). While at USC she led the development of a full-time Nurse Practitioner (NP) Primary Care Managed practice. Initiating and development of a USC College of Nursing Faculty Practice Business Enterprise that serves patients in the Columbia area. She has mentored thousands of NPs in SC.
Dr. Burgess has been prolific in participating on over 100 peer reviewed podium presentations and peer reviewed publications. Her many roles of leadership include: Past President of the SC Nurses Association (SCNA), Chair of the APRN Council, Treasurer of Sigma Theta Tau Alpha XI, Vice Chair of the Coalition for Access to Healthcare, and President of the Nurse Practitioner Coalition. Dr. Burgess was also elected and served on the Richland Two School Board of Trustees.
Dr. Burgess’s awards include the AANP State Award of Excellence, SCNA President’s Award, USC Outstanding Alumni, awarded as a fellow in the American Nurses Association (FAAN) and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP).
Dr. Burgess continues to practice as a NP for the South Carolina Department of Mental Health for the Women’s Health Outpatient Clinic and a NP provider with Agape Hospice.
Our History
The South Carolina Nurses Foundation, Inc. was established in 1974 as a nonprofit organization to promote high standards of health care by facilitating the advancement of nursing through rewards, grants, and scholarship. The original charter states that the Foundation was established for charitable, scientific, literary, and educational purposes. Through the promotion of nursing and the encouragement of excellence in nursing practice, the Foundation's major goal is to improve the quality of health care to all South Carolina citizens by advancing the profession of nursing in the state. |

The SCNF is affiliated with the South Carolina Nurses Association (SCNA). The Foundation is supported largely through gifts and donations to fund the various scholarship and award programs. The Nurses Care Specialty License Plate Initiative was created in 2002 to provide an opportunity for nurses and the supporters of nursing to contribute to the profession and to increase the public's awareness of the contribution of nurses. "Nurses Care" specialty license plates are available from the Department of Motor Vehicles. The proceeds are used to fund both graduate and undergraduate scholarships.
